Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background as a speaker for community events?
I have only done online event speaking in the past, so this event will be my first in-person event to speak on! Around the start of 2022, I told myself that I wanted to speak at events so I started telling people in my network. Because of this, I was able to land a couple of online speaking opportunities alongside some podcast interviews as well. I’ve always been interested in speaking to groups of people and am happy with the opportunities that have presented themselves just by asking for them!
What motivated you to join the Community Rebellion Conference as a speaker, and what are you most excited about for the event?
Honestly, the opportunity to travel overseas and to meet so many community professionals that I have only connected with online! I am pleased about the opportunity and excited to share any knowledge that I have in the community space and learn from others as well.
What is your favorite thing about attending in-person events or conferences?
The connections that you make with people. You can only get so much by attending an event online. I love getting to meet others and building relationships.
Your talk at the conference is about mental health. Can you give us a sneak peek into what the talk will cover and why this topic is important to you?
This topic is super important to me because it is why I got into the community industry in the first place. At the start of 2020 and the height of the pandemic is when I hit my burnout and anxiety wall and knew I needed a change, which eventually led me to become a community manager. During my talk, I will be speaking about a few tips that have worked for me as a community manager in managing my mental health.
Do you have any resources or tools you recommend to community managers looking to prioritize their mental health?
There are so many tools out there, but what works for me might not work for the next person so I don’t want to overwhelm everyone with new tools to download, etc. Having said that, I will say the one tool that I see that is universal (and something that I will be speaking more about during my talk) is getting outside to get some fresh air. When you’re stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, etc. go outside for a bit. It can do wonders for the mind!
What are you most looking forward to at the Community Rebellion Conference?
Getting to meet so many community professionals who I look up to and also to connect with others who I haven’t yet! Oh and traveling to Prague of course :)
Thank you for taking the time to speak with us, Max Pete!
